A new U.K.-based think tank has warned the FDA that its rules preventing the cultivation of vegetables that contain brominated ingredients will be vulnerable to foodborne illness.
In a report titled “The FDA Should Regulate the Vegetable Food Supply,” the group argues that the FDA has no authority to limit the supply of vegetables to the United States, let alone the world.
The report warns that the agency needs to change its rules to “remove the ‘safety margin’ which allows the supply to continue to grow in the face of new and untested risks.”
The group says the “safety margin” could allow the U and other countries to increase production of bromination-free vegetables.
The FDA, which has not taken any actions on the issue since January, is currently reviewing a proposed rule that would create a “safety net” of food to keep demand for vegetables high.
But the group is calling for a much broader overhaul of the agency’s oversight of the supply chain.
The report argues that its oversight of food safety, which it has limited to only two states, has allowed for a system of “food monopolies” where large corporations and big agribusinesses have dominated the supply chains of many food products.
The group also argues that “the FDA has been too passive in its oversight and failed to take action against the food companies that profit from the system.”
The group says a new food safety rule should ban all vegetable oils that contain high levels of bisphenol-A (BPA) or other ingredients that could be toxic to consumers.BPA is a chemical compound that is used to make plastic food containers and is commonly found in vegetable oils.
The chemical has been linked to reproductive disorders, reproductive cancers, and developmental issues.
The American Chemistry Council, which represents the nation’s largest chemical manufacturers, has also argued that the U to limit its brominating supply to the U States.
The chemical industry says bromine, which is used in BPA-free vegetable oils, is safe for humans.
But the industry says the use of boron compounds, which are found in the vegetable oils and are found naturally in borax, is harmful to humans.
In an emailed statement, the FDA said it is reviewing the report and would “review and consider its recommendations.”
